Claire Danes replaces Keira Knightley on Apple TV’s The Essex Serpent
According to Variety, Emmy and Golden Globe Award winning actress Claire Danes has officially signed up to star in Apple TV + ‘s upcoming series adaptation of Sarah Perry’s novel, titled Period The Essex snake. The Danes will replace Oscar nominee Keira Knightley, who left the project due to childcare concerns due to the ongoing pandemic.

Posted in 2016 by Serpent’s Tail, The Essex snake will follow the story of a newly widowed Cora in 1893 who managed to move from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter, Essex after the death of her abusive husband. After arriving in her new town, she is immediately intrigued by the village’s local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex snake has returned to the area.

The series adaptation is by Clio Barnard (Dark River) based on a script by Anna Symon (Mrs. Wilson). It is produced by Knightley, Barnard, Symon, Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Patrick Walters, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman with Andrea Cornwell as producer.

The series will be Danes’ latest major television project after starring in the acclaimed political thriller Homeland which completed its 8 season run last year. Her other notable works are: My so-called life which gave her her first Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama; and Grandin Temple That earned her an Emmy and Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series.
