Batgirl and Zatanna join HBO Max
Late last year, DC Films President Walter Hamada announced that a handful of his studio’s upcoming superhero films could eventually be released as HBO Max exclusives. Some of the ideas that got circulated included new features introduced by Batgirl and Static Shock. During an investor day presentation hosted by WarnerMedia’s parent company, AT&T, those in power finally confirmed today that these plans are in full swing. During the presentation of AT&T, WB teased its DC board with a new graphic via Collider. The list of titles (which spanned film, television, and video games) was included Batgirl as well as a vehicle for Zatanna. See for yourself below (via SuperHeroHype).
Warner Bros. has been working on a stand-alone Batgirl film for several years. Warner Bros. originally commissioned Joss Whedon to write and direct the 2017 film. However, the project was set after he left the director a year later. But the film got a second chance when WB hired Birds of Prey and Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson to make her own passport for the script.

Meanwhile, there have been rumors of WB’s plans for Zatanna for at least July last year. When it was revealed that JJ Abrams was developing his own Justice League Dark series, fans assumed the young sorceress would be part of that lineup. But given what we now know, it may not be. It’s not clear whether HBO wants to star Max Zatanna in her own movie or direct a new TV series. Regardless, this won’t be her first appearance in live action. Serinda Swan previously played Zatanna in Smallville.
