In the film, the indignant retired General Enrique is eventually tried for the genocidal massacre of thousands of Mayans decades ago. When a horde of angry protesters threatens to invade their opulent home, the women of the house – his high-profile wife, conflicted daughter, and precocious granddaughter – weigh their responsibility to protect the erratic, senile Enrique from the devastating truths that lie behind the public exposure and death face increasing feeling that an angry supernatural force is targeting them for its crimes. Meanwhile, most of the family’s domestic servants flee, leaving only the loyal housekeeper Valeriana behind until a mysterious young indigenous maid arrives.
La Llorona merges the terror of myth and reality into a devastating exposé of the genocidal atrocities against the Mayan community in Guatemala. Through a modern retelling of the classic Latin American legend, the film forces a reckoning of crimes that are not too distant and should not be forgotten. After premiering at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, where the film was recognized as Best Picture (Venice Days), the horror thriller had an impressive festival tour with appearances on TIFF, Sundance and BFI and is hailed as a true representation of Latino culture .
The title is the third feature by Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante (Tremble), who wrote the film together with Lisandro Sánchez and the stars María Mercedes Coroy (Ixcanul), Margarita Kenéfic (Aro Tolbukhin in the head of a murderer), Sabrina de la Hoz (Tremble) and Julio Diaz.
