Focus Features acquires Wright & Lawrance-led Silent Twins
Focus Features has successfully acquired the rights to director Agnieszka Smoczynska’s upcoming biopic thriller drama entitled Silent twins, based on the real-life story of identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons, led by Black PantherLetitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance (The long song), which recently developed production in Poland. In addition to the lead role, Wright and Lawrance also act as producers and executive producers, respectively.

“Aga is a visually stunning and fantastically sensitive filmmaker who treats the twins who are judged so harshly as ordinary girls with extraordinary fantasies,” said Kiska Higgs, president of production and acquisitions for Focus Features, in a statement. “She has created a luminous, magical world for her stars in which they explore the topics of love, longing, identity and what it really means to have the ‘other half’.”
Based on the 1986 novel by the author Marjorie Wallace, Silent twins Set in the 1970s and 1980s, it follows the haunting story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twins from the only black family in a small town in Wales. The couple feel isolated from this unwelcome community and turn inward. It refuses to communicate with anyone but each other and withdraws into its own fantasy world of artistic inspiration and youthful desires. Following a vandalism inspired by an American boy whom they both idolize, the girls, now teenagers, are unceremoniously sentenced to Broadmoor, an infamous mental hospital, where they will have the choice of separating and surviving or dying together .

The film adaptation is by Smoczynska (The bait) in her English-language debut based on a screenplay by Andrea Seigel in which Madants Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska produces alongside Ewa Puszczyńska from Extreme Emotions, Ben Pugh from 42, Joshua Horsfield, Anita Gou from Kindred Spirit and Alicia van Couvering from 30WEST Katie Anderson, Jake Carter and Trevor Groth, Andrea Seigel, Charlie Morrison and Marjorie Wallace are executive producers.

Silent twins was co-funded by Kindred Spirit, the Polish Film Institute, moderator Inwestycje and Cofiloisir. Focus Features will handle the US release of the film, while Universal Pictures will handle international distribution.
