New photos from the set of the sequel to the video game film, which began production recently last month, reveal another familiar face in Knuckles the Echidna. The red Echidna has been a friendly rival to Sonic since its debut in 1994 Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for the Sega Genesis and got his first leading role in Sonic & Knuckles later in the year. He has since been a mainstay of the series and has grown to become one of the most popular characters in Sega’s platform series.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees many returning cast and crew. Jeff Fowler will direct the sequel after causing a sensation with the original film, which was his directorial debut. Writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller with Neal H. Mortiz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara all return to produce, while Haijime Satomi, Haruki Satomi and Tim Miller will be executive producing.

The original film was released on February 14, 2020 and was a surprise hit with both critics and audiences. Our own Grant Hermanns enjoyed it and said in his review that it was “one of the happiest surprises I’ve had in a theater”. He concludes “While it doesn’t break the curse of the video game like the adaptation of a Nintendo franchise last year, it still turned out to be a fun, exhilarating, and very entertaining endeavor that is far better than it could possibly be, and I’m me would be very interested in the franchise continuing. “
