After the musical artist HER won an Oscar for the best original song earlier this year, she is now turning to a role in front of the camera.

The Hollywood Reporter. reports that SHE – real name Gabriella Wilson – is in the final stages of negotiations to make her acting debut in The colour purple Film musical. Wilson is supposed to play Squeak, a waitress in a juke shop who wants to become a singer. Her song “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah was named Best Original Song at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The musical is to be staged by Blitz Bazawule, who most recently directed the musical film and the visual album Black is king for Beyoncé. Marcus Gardley will write the script, which will be adapted from the book about the musical by Marsha Norman. The film is currently in pre-production, with Corey Hawkins (In the heights) after joining the film as well.

Based on the incredibly popular 1982 novel, The colour purple tells the story of a woman named Celie Harris, an African American woman in the American South, and the many struggles she faced during her life in the early to mid-20th century. In 2005 the book was adapted into a musical with music by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.

The original Broadway production ran from 2005 to 2008 and won eleven Tony Award nominations in 2006. The production was revived in 2015, ran for two years, and won two Tony Awards in 2016, including one for best revival of a musical.
