It’s no secret that the cinema industry has been hard hit in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. With many theaters still awaiting audience return, James Cameron is hoping the theaters as a whole will survive for the box office.

During a recent guest appearance on The Tonight Show, Cameron shared his hopes for the theater industry. While understanding the box office battles that movies like Avatar and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have, Cameron just hopes the theaters survive so they can both make a ton at the box office.
“Everyone makes a big deal of it [the box office battle]But the truth is, what we really need to focus on is getting back in theaters, ”said Cameron (transcribed via IndieWires Zack Sharf). “Hopefully we can still have movies like this, ‘Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’ and the big Marvel movies and all that, movies that are capable of making $ 1 billion or $ 2 billion.”
Cameron went on to pray that after the pandemic ends, theaters will remain a viable way to watch movies as it is a sacred place for many. “Let’s pray that after this pandemic and after this shift towards streaming, the cinemas are still there, not that I have anything against streaming. There is great writing and great shows [streaming]But let’s remember that cinema is a sacred experience for all of us. Let’s go back out when it’s safe. “

Cameron is currently working on the sequel to the hugely successful and popular avatar. Currently, Avatar 2 will be released on December 16, 2022 after being pushed back a few times. This is followed by three more films, with Avatar 3 expected for December 22, 2023 and Avatar 4 for December 18, 2026. Another sequel, Avatar 5, is only planned if Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 do well enough at the box office.
