In a 2017 interview, Blomkamp teased his plans for one District 9 follow up…
“With District 9, I plan to make another film in this world.” He said when asked if Oats Studios was working on ties District 9, Elysium or Chappie. “Going back and working with WETA and doing the film would be cool, but whatever is there may not fit what we’re trying to do here.”

The original District 9 It was followed by a small bureaucrat named Wikus (Copley) who comes into contact with a mutative alien substance. In the midst of his transformation, he becomes the target of a weapons company that wants to use him for research purposes. He cannot fit into people and has to hide in a strange slum.
Published in August 2009, District 9 starred Sharlto Copley. Produced by Peter Jackson (who worked on a failed one alongside Blomkamp gloriole Adjustment) was made for just $ 30 million and grossed $ 210.8 million worldwide. It received rave reviews and was – surprisingly for a genre film – nominated for four Oscar prizes, including “Best Picture”, “Film Editing”, “Visual Effects” and “Adapted Screenplay”.
While Blomkamp hasn’t released a feature since Chappie 2013, it has been attached to several high profile franchise images, including the legacy sequels Alien 5 and RoboCop returns. He canceled both projects. Blomkamp recently made a horror film titled during the COVID-19 pandemic Demonic and will debut at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival in March.
