New Radicals split in 1999 – just months after the release of their 1998 single “You Get What You Give”. On Wednesday, January 20, the band will reunite for the first time in 22 years to play their hit single at Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ virtual inauguration event, Parade Across America, Rolling Stone reports. New radicals will close the parade, which takes place after the swearing-in ceremony.
“If there is one thing on earth that could possibly bring us to bring the band together, if only for a day, it is the hope that our song could even be the smallest beacon in such a dark time”, Gregg Alexander, front man for New Radicals said in a statement.
During the campaign, the song became the music of choice for Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff. Joe Biden has spoken about how the song became important to their family in his son Beau Biden’s last days.
“During breakfast, Beau often let me hear what I thought was his New Radicals theme song, You Get What You Give,” Biden wrote in his memoir “Promise Me, Dad.” “It is a great honor to perform the song again after such a long time, because we all have great respect for Beau’s military service and such high hopes for the unity and normality that Joe and Kamala will bring back to our country in this time of crisis” added Alexander.
Inauguration Day celebrations also include performances by Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato, John Legend, and others.
“You Get What You Give” was named one of the “Top 200 Tracks of the 90s” by Pitchfork.
