Amazon Prime Video has released the official trailer for their latest documentary, titled The boy from MedellínThe focus is on award-winning Colombian reggaeton singer J Balvin, who is returning to his hometown for a sold-out stadium solo concert. The video also shows the global superstar’s political dilemma as to whether or not he should use his platform to voice the needs and rights of his people. The documentary will be available for streaming on Friday, May 7th.

The boy from Medellín is an intimate portrait of one of the greatest international superstars of our time, which offers us a haunting insight into one of the most important and emotionally charged moments of his life. Next up is Jose Alvaro Osorio Balvin, better known as J Balvin, as he prepares for the most important concert of his career – a sold out stadium show in his hometown of Medellín, Colombia. But as the performance draws closer, the streets explode with growing political unrest, forcing the Latin Grammy-winning musician to grapple with his responsibility as an artist to his country and legions of fans around the world. As the public pressure of the upcoming concert mounts behind the scenes, Balvin continues to grapple with the fears and depression that have plagued him for years.

The documentary is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman (Cartel country, City of Ghosts, A private war). It was shot entirely in the intense and dramatic week before the concert.

J Balvin is best known for his hits like “Mi Gente”, “Ginza”, “Ay Vamos”, “I Like It”, “Safari”, “Loco Contigo” and “One Day”. He has worked with a number of popular artists including Beyonce, Cardi B, Dua Lipa, Pharell Williams, Pitbull, Bad Bunny and others. He has won four Latin Grammy Awards for Best Urban Music Album and two Grammy nominations for Album of the Year.
