This contemporary film is directed by Ali LeRoi based on a script by Stanley Kalu and stars Steven Silver (13 reasons why), Spencer Neville (Ozark) and Nicola Peltz (Transformers: Age of Extinction). What follows is a wealthy Nigerian-American teenager (Silver) who is stopped by the police, shot dead, and immediately wakes up – re-experienced over and over again on the same day, trapped in a terrible time warp that forces him to face difficult truths about his life and life himself. The film explores a number of issues prevalent in American society, including racism, police brutality, LGBTQ acceptance, mental health, and addiction.
Written four years ago by Nigerian born Stanley Kalu when he was a student at USC, the screenplay for The obituary for Tunde Johnson was the winner of THE LAUNCH: Million Dollar Screenplay Competition 2018, co-founded by producers Zachary Green and Jason Shuman to find the next generation of great screenwriters from around the world. Winning the competition came with a $ 50,000 educational scholarship, literary representation, and a promise that his screenplay would be produced as a feature film on a budget of at least $ 1 million. Kalu was named the winner on August 8, 2018, and main photography began on October 25, 2018.

This bold, penetrating drama premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2019, was one of eight films to win the prestigious Next Wave award, opened the Austin Film Festival a month later, and won the Audience Award for Best Debut Narrative Feature at LA Outfest 2020. Produced by Zachary Green pga, Jason Shuman pga, Chuck Bond and Marni Bond, The obituary for Tunde Johnson is the directorial debut for LeRoi and the screenwriting debut for Kalu.
